History – Youth Group

UPPER LANSDOWNE YOUTH GROUP

In 1988 it was felt that there was a need for a social outlet for the high school children of Upper Lansdowne.

Wingham Community Centre were approached and they were very supportive in agreeing to an Outreach Youth Group that would be covered by their insurance.

Once a week the children would be dropped off at the hall by the high school bus at 4.30 pm and collected by their parents at 6.30 pm.

Under adult supervision, two 18 years olds, Scott Fletcher and Andrew Green would organise games, music and afternoon tea each week.

Once a month the group would hold a disco night, inviting others outside the group.  The members would then take turns to act as DJs on the night.  This was held on Friday nights until 9 pm.

These nights were very popular with the local children.

Outings and picnics were also popular, happening on weekends.

Camping trips were also occasionally happening, being held at Swan’s Crossing and Coopernook State Forest.

Ages were set at 14 years and upwards and the group averaged 25 in numbers.

Unfortunately the two 18 year olds moved away for work and the adult supervisors were unable to carry on, with the group closing after 2 years.
