Valerie Mavis Schubert was born on 22 February 1925 at Taree to Edward Henry Schubert and Marjorie Barlin.
She enlisted on 22 June 1943 into the Australian Women’s Army Service at Upper Lansdowne and was aged 18 stating her father Edward Schubert of Upper Lansdowne as her next of kin. She was marched out to 1 Australian Signal Training Battalion at Bonegilla, Victoria and remained there until 9 March 1944. Other postings in Victoria included Melbourne, Ascot Vale, Royal Park and South Melbourne.
During 1945 Valerie completed Signal Operator’s School 41/20 and qualified as Tg 2 Standard.
When Valerie was discharged on 25 June 1947 she was posted to Australian Women’s Army Service AHQ Signals.
Valerie married Frederick Leslie MacDouall in Sydney in 1950. Valerie died on 20 September 2001 at Taree and is buried at the Dawson River Cemetery.
