Raymond Arthur Atkins was born on the 4 November 1916 at Upper Lansdowne to Hector Arthur Atkins and Annie Maria Unicomb.
He was aged 25 years 5 months when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force at Upper Lansdowne on the 20 April 1942 naming his father Hector Atkins as his next of kin and his occupation as farm hand.
Ray served in 24 Operational Base Unit during WW2 as a guard. His Statement of Service is below.
Ray was awarded the War Medal 1939-45 and the General Service Badge.
He was discharged on 4 October 1944 to resume civil occupation in the dairying industry.
Ray farmed at Upper Lansdowne before moving to Wingham where he worked for the County Council.
In 1945 he married Sadie Aubrey Haydon and they had three children. Ray and his wife moved to Harrington in retirement. Ray died on 3 April 2007 aged 90 years and is buried at Manning Great Lakes Memorial Gardens.
His brothers Alister Rex and Dallas Wilfred also served in the Australian Army during WW2.
