History – WW2 Soldier Joy Fleming 97339

Joy Fleming was born at Taree on 4 February 1922 to Stanley Irvine Fleming and Alice Iris Fennell.

Joy enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force on the 15 April 1942 at Central Lansdowne aged 22 years and 2 months.  She listed her father Stanley Fleming of Central Lansdowne as her next of kin.

Joy worked at Bradfield Park as a messwoman while enlisted and received the War Medal 1939-45.

At the time of discharge on 10 June 1943, she was posted to 2 Embarkation Depot.  Joy was discharged at her own request.

Joy married Gilbert Atkins in 1943 at Taree.

Joy’s brother Eric died as a Prisoner of War in Thailand on 7 January 1944 and her sister Rosalie served in the Australian Women’s Army Service during WW2.
