James Fredrick Unger was born on 21 June 1907 at Lansdowne to Samuel Joseph Unger and Mary A Ryan.
James enlisted in the Australian Army on 4 September 1940 at Upper Lansdowne and was aged 33 years 3 months stating his occupation as casual labourer and his father Samuel Joseph Unger as his next of kin.
James’ first posting was to 2/4 Pioneer Battalion. James embarked at Sydney on 27 June 1941 arriving in the Middle East on 31 July 1941. He returned to Australia on 9 January 1943 onboard the ‘Canadian Star’ disembarking at Sydney. He remained in Australia until his discharge. His reason for discharge was being required for employment in an essential occupation.
When James was discharged on 26 July 1944 he was posted to 4 Aust Army Troops Company Royal Australian Engineers.
James married Dorothy Amelia Sawtell in 1957 at Marrickville. James died at Taree on 27 August 1994 aged 87 and is buried in the Lansdowne Cemetery.
