History – WW2 Soldier Francis John Dimond NX1522

Francis John Dimond was born on 18 February 1908 at Wingham to John James Dimond and Agnes Ellen Dowling.

Francis enlisted in the Australian Army on 20 October 1939 at South West Rocks and was aged 31 years 8 months stating his occupation as labourer and his wife Ellen Ann Dimond (nee Fairhurst) as his next of kin.

At the time of enlistment he was posted to 2/2 Battalion, 6 Division.

On 9 January 1940 he embarked on HMT U4 at Sydney and disembarked at Kantara (Middle East) on 13 February 1940.  On 17 August 1940 he was transferred to 16 Australian Infantry Brigade Anti Tank Company.  He attended an anti-tank course in September 1940 and was transferred to 16 Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 1 December 1940.

On 26 March 1941 he embarked from the Middle East for Greece.  He was reported missing in action on 17 April. 1941.

Francis was awarded the 1939/45 Star, the Africa Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939/45 and the Australia Service Medal 1939/45.

At the time of his death he was posted to 1 Anti Tank Regiment.
